I view excellence in teaching as the ability to provide learning experiences to students that are meaningful both academically and personally. Knowing that each class comprises a diversity of students with different goals, academic strengths, and learning styles, I create an atmosphere that makes the most of the learning experience for each student. To do so, I first work to foster the enthusiasm of the students for the material. Students are too often lost to the field of science because presentations of content are laden with terminology and entirely lecture-based. I find that interest in the biological sciences can be sparked among students when I express my own enthusiasm for the subject, when the pedagogy is varied in its format, and when the curriculum is designed to permit students to play a more active role in their own learning.
